A McIntosh A Day
I’m thankful for my extended Kirk family. I first met Annie, Chris & Mark LaMoreaux’s daughter, when she was in high school and I was visiting Moscow on vacation. She called me Aunt Lucy and we formed a bond – one that still exists today. Annie’s all grown up now and quite a lovely woman – a wife and a mother. She’s given me a very special gift…the opportunity to be Aunt Lucy to her children.
I make every effort to tell young parents, if you want your children to love your siblings or Kirk family, you have to show them your love for the person and encourage them to do the same. It’s really a simple thing, and a gift to your children, the family member or friend,
and yourself. My brother, Doug, and my sister (in-law), Paula, continue to be incredibly gracious with their children towards me, and consistently demonstrate how love flows. Because Chris showed her love for me, Annie did the same, and now Annie’s children, Emma and Bea, are wrapped all around my heart.
And it just keeps getting better. Sweet Violet Mae was born on March 20th. You can visit the McIntosh blog to see her baby pictures. I visited on Tuesday and got to hold Violet without having to compete with Grandma Nana and Violet’s other adoring fans. She’s a beauty, just like all the other McIntosh women.
While I was visiting, Emma and Bea dressed up in lovely dresses and fancy shoes. I captured the photos on my phone and obviously haven’t learned how to adjust stuff. But cuteness just can’t be stifled.
Hockey…Canada’s Glorious Game
Tonight I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Frank Ewert’s public thesis defense. I love this man. It’s been such a pleasure getting to know Frank these last few years. He’s the Sales/Marketing guy at Canon Press, formerly known as the Shipping guy. He doesn’t do anything halfway. It’s either 150% or Frank’s not in it. He’s married to Sandy – quite a gem – and they make such a cute couple. Here’s the email invitation that went out from the kirk:

Yes, these stories all center around Canada’s glorious game, but no, you shouldn’t have to be a hockey nut to enjoy them. Instead, my aim has been to write stories that focus on personality to grasp the reader’s attention and entertain him or her. If you don’t believe me, you should come to my defense: I’ll be reading at least one story there. If you’d like to come and want to read up beforehand, email me (*snip*), and I’ll send you the stories I won’t be reading at the defense (so that you don’t get lost in the middle of things).
Frank knocked it out of the park tonight. Hmmm…probably not a good comment for a hockey-loving, guy. There’s no shame in Frank’s fiction game. Well done, my friend.

It had to happen. Apparently that never-say-never thing applies to my brother. When people would ask, “When are you gonna start blogging?” my brother would snicker and say something about ice cubes or airborne pigs. Well guess what…he’s blogging.

Courtly Love And The What?
David Dalbey publicly defended his thesis tonight at New Saint Andrews College. Here’s the full description of his thesis:

Courtly Love and the “Cathar Thesis”: A defense and partial rehabilitation of Denis de Rougemont’s L’Amour en L’OccidentIn 1939, Denis de Rougemont wrote Love in the Western World, an examination of the history of what we know as “Romantic Love,” in order to diagnose the tragic nature of marital and literary love in the modern West. Among his various speculations on the origins of romantic love in connection with the troubadours of 12th century France, de Rougemont offered that the Albigensian heretics known as the Cathars may have contributed to the origins of the Courtly Love of the Troubadour’s lyrics. His theory was discredited, in part due to its resemblance to those recently put forward by neo-mystics and grail-seekers, and has not been carefully examined to this day. This thesis is an attempt to lay some historical groundwork for de Rougemont’s claim; contending that the Cathars were far significant in their discursive state than is often acknowledged by contemporary Troubadour-scholars, and so ought to be considered in the examination of the Troubadours and the origins of Courtly Love.
I work with David over at Canon Press. I love this man. He has a wicked sense of humor, he’s super smart, and he doesn’t take himself too seriously. His wife, Alisha, gave me a heads-up last week and I’m really glad I was able to attend his thesis defense. It’s such a pleasure to work with David. He’s refreshing and has no problem telling me my ideas suck. Then again, I have no problem telling him his designs suck.
